SATHANAS

Sathanas is a death metal band from New Brighton, Pennsylvania USA. The band was formed in 1988 by Paul Tucker as a result of a dying metal scene and lack of good local talent to perform metal, but disbanded in 1989, only to reform several years later. Sathanas' music has always maintained an old school death / thrash metal sound with bone crunching guitars, pounding bass tempos, and bludgeoning drum rhythms topped off with growling lead and guttural backing vocals. Lyrically Sathanas music is anti-Christian, painting dark soundscapes laden with apocalyptic imagery.
Sathanas released their infamous demo "Ripping Evil" in 1988 at Watson's Recordings, famous for the classic track "Jaws Of Satan" which has been covered by a host of bands including Occult and most recently by Vulture Lord. In 1992 Paul was joined by bassist Bill Davidson who is still an active
member in Sathanas today. The next Sathanas release was a 7"vinyl issued on Reaper Records of Belgium in 1994 entitled "Ripping Evil". Due to a revolving door of drummers Sathanas would not release any material until the Armies Of Charon CD on Supernal Music of London in 1999. Signing with Cybertzara Productions (Blackmetal.com) in 2001 Sathanas released the CD's "Black Earth" and "Thy Dark Heavens", followed later that year by the MCD "Cruentus Diabolos" on Drakkar Productions of France. Thy Dark Heavens was supported by a small European tour, gaining the band more fans
from across the Atlantic.
In 2002 Sathanas released the Sathanas/Bathym split CD "Jaws Of Satan" for From Beyond Productions of Holland. Jaws Of Satan featured old live Sathanas recordings of the original lineup as well as the entire "Ripping Evil" demo. The split CD showcased songs from Bathym, a short lived project put together by Paul Tucker after the disbanding of Sathanas in 1989.
2003 would see the release of the rare and highly sought after 7" vinyl "Warlords Of Death" on Agonia Records of Poland. Once again with drummers coming and going Paul and Bill were joined by Jim Strauss, who performed on the infamous "Rites Of The Black Mass" CD by Acheron. Finally with a solid and dedicated line up, Sathanas recorded "Entering The Diabolic Trinity" for Pulverised Records of Singapore in 2005. "Entering The Diabolic Trinity" displays definite growth and maturing of Sathanas both musically and lyrically.
In June of 2005 Sathanas returned to Europe to perform at the Festung Open Air Festival before an anxious and hungry crowd in Bitterfeld Germany, followed by an appearance at Extreme Aggression IV in Leeuwarden Holland. Having received great acclaim and excellent reviews from metal magazines both in print and online including featured articles in Metal Maniacs and Pit Magazine, "Entering The Diabolic Trinity" has proven to be Sathanas most powerful release to date. Sathanas are currently preparing to record their new CD entitled "Crowned Infernal" for Pulverised Records, slated for a spring of 2007 release. In addition to "Crowned Infernal" are the releases of the long awaited MCD "Flesh For The Devil" on Pagan Records of Poland, and "Hex Nefarious" on Death To Mankind Records of Spain. Sathanas are currently booked to support the release of "Crowned Infernal" on tour with Hate of Poland on a 23date tour scheduled to begin in May of 2007.

ADAGIO

Adagio is a French symphonicprogressive metal band. Stephan Forté, the band's guitarist, is considered the creative force behind Adagio. Adagio's music is characterized by technical precision, dark, dense orchestration, complex lead work, and a driving rhythm section. However, on the group's latest effort, Dominate, they have added death gruntsto their sound. The band has finished the pre-production of their 4th album, Archangels in Black. The album will feature nine songs plus one Japanese bonus. According to the band's website the "compositions are the ultimate between melodic and extreme metal, and can be considered as a more brutal version of Underworld."

THE RED DEATH

The Red Death are a death metal band from Bath, New York. Formed in 2002 after the demise of Another Day Forgotten by singer Paul Hamblin, guitarist Josh Williammee, and drummer Graham Mitchell, the original lineup was rounded out by guitarist Brian Van Gelder and bassist Karl Janovec. In 2003 Bryan left the band and was replaced by Nate Golia, a guitarist from nearby Rochester, NY, formerly of another metal band, Warblade (band). That summer they embarked on their first short tour with Virginia screamo band Shadows and the Silence. Shadows and the Silence's bass player was a Bath native, Dominic Mastronunzio, and he would replace Karl the following summer. While on a three-week tour with New Jersey's With Resistance, the band began speaking with Metal Blade Records and would sign with them the following fall; however, Nate would leave the band to concentrate on school and be replaced by Auburn, NY's Aaron Conti, formerly of If Hope Dies. After signing to Metal Blade, the band embarked on several extended, full-U.S. tours with bands such as From a Second Story Window, The Acacia Strain, Undying, Through the Eyes of the Dead, and Accursed Dawn, in 2006 they were dropped. With new bassist Jordan Rathbun, the band has recorded a new demo for prospective labels. Paul Hamblin has also recently caught the "acting bug" and is jetsetting to Hollywood bi-weekly to star in some low budget and blockbuster releases, like Mr. Goat and Put it All In. Graham Mitchell is now head of a mine expansion project southeast of Erie, PA, and spends most of his free time there designing complicated mining equipment and safety harnesses. Aaron Conti has founded a record label by the name of "Roadside Records" and is looking for new talent everyday. New Guitarist Mark Kelley has recently been seen somewhere near Ft. Lauderdale but sources say he always makes it to weekly rehearsals on time and spry. Jordan is looking to plant his roots and is engaged to be married next year on April 20th, friends of Rathbun indicate that his fiancee is pregnant with their first child and that the location of the wedding is due to be on the tip-top of the television antenna on the Eiffel Tower (Paris, France). Former guitar player Joshua "Dino-Puncher" Williammee is in development with a burl selling pyramid scheme and is reportedly doing awful. Former long-time bassist Jackson Portwood has been seen in the Phoenix area spray painting large murals for corporate art-in-advertising projects and is yet to shower. Matt Faulisi.

BLOODRUNK (CHILDREN OF BODOM)

Blooddrunk is the sixth studio album by Finnish metal band Children of Bodom released on April 9, 2008 through Spinefarm Records. The album contains eight original songs and a re-recorded version of the single"Tie My Rope". Various editions feature one or two cover songsas bonus tracks. The limited edition digipak version of the album includes a bonus DVD with 5.1 surround mixes of all songs and the video and making-of for "Blooddrunk".

GOTHIC METAL

'''Gothic metal''' (or '''goth metal''') is a subgenre of heavy metal music. It combines of the dark melancholy of gothic rock with the aggression of heavy metal. The genre originated during the early 1990s in Europe as an outgrowth of death/doom, a fusion of death metal and doom metal. The music of gothic metal is diverse with bands known to adopt the gothic approach to different styles of heavy metal music. Lyrics are generally melodramatic and mournful with inspiration fromgothic fiction as well as personal experiences.

Pioneers of gothic metal include Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride and Anathema, all from the north of England. Other pioneers from the first half of the 1990s include Type O Negative from the United States, Tiamat from Sweden and The Gathering from the Netherlands. Norwegian band Theatre of Tragedy developed the "beauty and the beast" aesthetic of combining aggressive male vocals with clean female vocals, a contrast that has since been adopted by many gothic metal groups. During the mid 1990s, Moonspell and Cradle of Filth brought the gothic approach to black metal. By the end of the decade, a symphonic metal variant of gothic metal had been developed by Tristania and Within Temptation.

In the 21st century, gothic metal has moved towards the mainstream in Europe, particularly in Finland where groups such as The 69 Eyes, Entwine, HIM, Lullacry, Poisonblack and Sentenced have released hit singles or chart-topping albums. In the US, however, only a few bands such as Lacuna Coil and Evanescence have found commercial success.

CRADLE OF FILTH (part 1)

Cradle of Filth are a heavy metal band formed in Suffolk, England in 1991. They have been embraced and disowned with equal fervour by various metal communities, and their particular subgenre has provoked a great deal of discussion. The band's sound evolved from black metal to a cleaner and more "produced" amalgam of gothic metal, Symphonic black metal and other extreme metal styles, while their lyrical themes and imagery are heavily influenced by gothic literature, poetry, mythology and horror films. The band have successfully broken free of their original niche by courting mainstream publicity (often to the chagrin of its early fanbase), and this increased accessibility has brought coverage by the likes of ''Kerrang!'' and MTV, frequent main stage appearances at major festivals such as Ozzfest and Download Festival, and in turn a more "commercial" image. They have sometimes been perceived as satanic by casual observers, although their outright lyrical references to satanism are few and far between, and use of satanic imagery has arguably always had more to do with the shock value than any seriously-held beliefs. According to ''Metal Hammer'' magazine, they are the most successful British metal band since Iron Maiden.

Cradle's first three years saw three demos and a rehearsal tape recorded amidst the sort of rapid line-up fluctuations that have continued ever since (Cradle has generally had around half a dozen members at any one time, but can boast more than twenty musicians in its history). The band also recorded an unreleased album entitled 'Goetia' prior to the third demo and their style shift, which was set for release on Tombstone records. Tombstone unfortunately went bust and couldn't afford to buy the recordings from the studio and all tracks were wiped. The band eventually signed to Cacophonous Records and their debut album, ''The Principle of Evil Made Flesh'', was also Cacophonous's first release in 1994. A step up in terms of production from the rehearsal quality of most of their demos, the album was still nevertheless a sparse and embryonic version of what was to come, with lead singer Dani Filth's vocals in particular bearing little similarity to the style he was later to develop. The album was well-received however, and as recently as June 2006 found its way into Metal Hammer's list of the top ten black metal albums of the last twenty years.

Cradle's relationship with Cacophonous soon soured; the band accusing the label of contractual and financial mismanagement. Acrimonious legal proceedings took up most of 1995, and the band finally signed to Music for Nations in 1996 after only one more contractually obligated Cacophonous recording: the EP ''Vempire or Dark Faerytales in Phallustein'' which, it has since been conceded, was hastily written as a Cacophonous escape-plan. Despite the circumstances of its release however, its handful of tracks are staples of the band's live sets to this day, and "Queen of Winter, Throned" was listed among twenty-five "essential extreme metal anthems" in a 2006 issue of ''Kerrang!'' magazine. The EP also marked Sarah Jezebel Deva's debut with the band, replacing Andrea Meyer; Cradle's first female vocalist and self-styled "satanic advisor". Deva has appeared on every subsequent Cradle release and tour, but has never been considered a full band member, having also performed with The Kovenant, Therion and Mortiis, and fronted her own Angtoria project along with Cradle's current bass player, Dave Pybus.

''Dusk...and Her Embrace'' followed the same year: a critically acclaimed breakthrough album that greatly expanded the band's fan-base throughout Europe and the rest of the world. A concept album of sorts based generally on vampirism and specifically (though loosely) on the writing of Sheridan Le Fanu, Cradle's inaugural album for Music for Nations set the tone for what was to follow. The album's production values matched the band's ambition for the first time, whilst Dani's vocal gymnastics were at their most extreme.

The increasingly theatrical stage shows of the 1997 European tour helped keep Cradle in the public eye, as did a burgeoning line of controversial merchandise; not least the notorious t-shirt depicting a masturbating nun on the front and the slogan "Jesus is a cunt" in large letters on the back. A handful of fans have faced court appearances and fines for wearing the shirt in public, and some band members themselves attracted a certain amount of hostile attention when they wore similar "I Love Satan" shirts to the Vatican. Alex Mosson, the Lord Provost of Glasgow from 1999-2003, called the shirts (and by implication the band) "sick and offensive". The band obviously approved, using the quote on the back cover of the 2005 DVD ''Peace Through Superior Firepower''.
