Det som engang var is the title of the third release from Burzum. It was recorded in April 1992 and originally released on Varg's own label Cymophane at 950 copies (later re-issued on Misanthropy). The Norwegian title translates to "That Which Once Was" in English. (Note that the ''song'' "Det som en gang var," with a slightly different spelling, would not appear until the next album, ''Hvis lyset tar oss'').
The album's cover is inspired by an Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (1st edition) module called "The Temple of Elemental Evil"
